La música de Perico Ripiao estuvo prohibida hasta mediados de la década de 1930 debido a la energía y el baile pro-activo que la acompañaba. El nombre Perico Ripiao en inglés se traduce como «Ripped Parrot», que se dice que era el nombre del establecimiento donde se tocaba la música, y se desarrolló el estilo inmediatamente reconocible. Muchos intentaron prohibir el estilo musical, hasta 1942 cuando el entonces presidente de la República Dominicana , Rafael Trujillo , declaró a Perico Ripiao la música nacional de la República Dominicana.
